What can an apprenticeship do for you?

Bolton Apprenticeships at Hilton Smythe

Apprenticeships are a great way for employees to combine practical training in a job with study. A typical apprenticeship opportunity will offer the chance to work alongside experienced staff whilst gaining job-specific skills. Apprentices still earn a wage and get holiday whilst studying towards a related qualification which would typically take up one day per working week.

Apprenticeships can take between 1 and 4 years to complete depending on the level.

The cost of funding an apprentice may put some employers off, but in reality apprentices often pay for themselves within a few years and can improve a company’s bottom line by boosting productivity and making companies more effective.

For a small business, running an apprenticeship scheme can help you to develop a dedicated, loyal workforce. The majority of apprentices are young school or college leavers, meaning that they have lots of energy with which to learn the ways of your business as you help them climb the career ladder within your organisation.

Research by Populus shows that 80 percent of employers questioned feel that apprenticeships reduce staff turnover, suggesting that apprentices feel loyal to the company which trained them.

Speaking for The Guardian, Samantha Parry, talent manager for AccorHotels speaks about the advantages to taking on an apprenticeship. “First, you are able to earn while you learn and gain a qualification in what you do. Second, it gets you on the career ladder straight from school – I can quote many examples of individuals who have advanced quicker in their career than those who gained a degree and then entered the world of work,”.

So apprenticeships – from higher level to degree apprenticeships – are a feasible alternative to university.
