The UK’s food service sector is forecast to grow to be worth £56.3bn by the end of 2019 according to Horizons. This is great news for anyone looking to start a food based business. Peter Backman, Horizons managing director, said that in 2014 the food service sector saw a growth of 3.8%, therefore being worth £46.6bn.
There are a few trends that have started to emerge according to Emma Read, Horizons’ director of marketing & business development, one being a shift in catering for health conscious customers as well as offering indulgent dishes.
An interesting trend that has begun to emerge is the age group 35-44 years are not eating out more than ever, causing a shift in needs and habits that are currently catered for.
Much of the growth in the food service sector was due to businesses such as pizza delivery outlets, managed branded pubs, pub restaurants and coffee shops.
Peter Backman advised operators to “keep in touch with the way people are eating out now and the products they want – the market is changing all the time and if you don’t offer what they want, someone else will.”
