Aubrey's was established In September 2009 by the current owner. Having undertaken training in Brittany she had ambitions to relay and reinvent the influence of authentic galette and crepes with the ethos being to keep it simple and to do it well.
The Galette can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages and traditionally formed part of a staple diet that could be locally produced enabling those living and working to go about their daily work. Originally cooked on hot plates known as Billigs above a log fire in the hearth the skill and accuracy of both temperature and pressure when cooking was mastered by woman at the time. They were then served with a simple covering of salted butter and eaten with the hands.
Aubrey's sells coffees and a range of loose leaf teas, specialists in Breton ciders, fresh juices and presses and a range of savoury crepes made with buckwheat flour and sweet crepes made with wheat or buckwheat flour, they also do interesting and popular inventive seasonal specials.
Aubrey's Traditional Creperie Ltd were runners up in the Observer Food Awards for 3 consecutive years 'Best Cheap Eats' category.
The original definition and function of a Creperie was to be an establishment within which customers could watch their food being cooked with ingredients they provided themselves. Crepes and Galettes have now become a culinary specialty which this business specialises and excels in.
