The refreshing combination of creamy ice cream blended with your favourite flavour of coffee on a hot summer day can hit the spot. Add chocolate and make it a mocha or why not try a cafe latte milkshake or a caramel coffee milkshake.

Pretty much everyone loves coffee, but what happens during the summer, when it’s too hot to enjoy a steaming cup of coffee without sweating? Luckily, someone thought of all of those things and invented something wonderful; coffee milkshakes!

The History of Coffee Milkshake Day

The term ‘milkshake’ was first used in 1885. At that time, milkshakes were an alcoholic whiskey drink, described as a sturdy, healthy eggnog type of drink, with eggs and whiskey. By 1900, the term referred to ‘wholesome drinks made with chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla syrups’. By the 1930s, milkshakes were a popular drink at malt shops, used by students as a meeting place or hangout.

Somewhere along the way, coffee was added to milkshakes to give them both a caffeine boost and the unique coffee flavor loved by millions worldwide, and then a day was created to celebrate the delicious combination of coffee and ice cream. There have been countless variations of this drink, one of which is Starbucks’ Frappuccino.

How to Celebrate Coffee Milkshake Day

It’s July, so it’s quite likely that if you’re reading this, it’s pretty hot outside. That’s why no day could be a better day to celebrate Coffee Milkshake Day than this very day, so why not make one? You’d also likely become everyone’s favorite colleague down at the office if you made some coffee milkshakes for your colleagues as well. Here is a simple, delicious recipe that throws a little bit of chocolate into the mix as well that is sure to make a hot summer afternoon much more bearable.

The perfect Coffee Milkshake:

  • 1 cup cold-brewed coffee or chilled strongly brewed coffee
  • 4 giant scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
  • whipped cream

  1. Blend the coffee, vanilla ice cream and 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup together in a blender until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a couple splashes of milk to loosen it up. If it is too thin, add a little more ice cream and pulse to smooth out.
  2. Pour the milkshake into one very large or two medium sized glasses.
  3. Top with a very generous head of whipped cream and drizzle with additional chocolate syrup.
  4. Serve immediately.

If that doesn’t sound like the perfect summer drink, what does?
